Cannabidiol, or CBD, is derived from the plant, cannabis. CBD is extracted from the flowers, leaves, and stalks of hemp and not from the seeds.
The use of CBD is increasing recently because people have started realising that it is a legal and harmless substance with many health benefits. What are these health benefits? Why is CBD legal? And how does it work? Read below to find out.
Benefits of using CBD
CBD can be used for a range of therapeutic applications. Here are some of the amazing benefits of CBD that have been reported by people and scientists:
A research review conducted in 2008 discovered that using CBD for chronic pain has a positive outcome. The same research also showed that CBD prevents nervous system degeneration.
The research also supported the finding that CBD does not cause addiction, as people do not develop a tolerance for CBD products.
Cure for Multiple sclerosis (MS)
MS is an autoimmune disease that affects the brain through the nerves. One of the main symptoms of MS is muscle spasms. These spasms are so intense that they cause constant pain in some people.
Research has found that the use of CBD oil reduces the level of spasticity a person feels.
Calms childhood epilepsy
CBD contains anti-seizure properties and, therefore, can be used to treat children who have neurological disorders like epilepsy.
A research in the New England Journal of Medicine highlighted that patients who took CBD had less frequent seizures than those who took placebos.
CBD is known to treat other ailments too. It can limit inflammation in the brain, reduce anxiety and depression, and decrease psychosis in schizophrenia.
The best thing about cannabis—people do not get addicted to it like they do when they take THC.
Difference between CBD and THC
Two compounds that are derived from the cannabis plant are CBD and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Many people assume that CBD and THC are the same but they are not. They are very different.
THC derived from cannabis is the main psychoactive compound in marijuana. The higher the content of THC, the higher the ‘high’ a person feels after taking marijuana.
CBD products, however, do not have a high content of THC, which is why when people consume these products they do not feel euphoric or get a“high”. CBD is derived from hemp and for a plant to be legally considered hemp it has to have less than 0.3% of the compound THC. For this reason, CBD is legal and not considered as a drug as opposed to THC.
In short, CBD contains the benefits that cannabis provides without the harmful drawbacks of THC compounds found in it.
How does CBD work?
CBD works by affecting your endocannabinoid system (ECS). It encourages the body to use the endocannabinoids it produces more effectively without altering your state of mind.
CBD is legal, beneficial and harmless. So why not use it?
